Before/After: A Bespoke Kitchen (Circa 1870 Doors Legacy)

by Square Footage

The original space was ample; however, it was dark and outdated.

The existing “U” shaped eat-in kitchen and formal dining room shared a dividing wall, establishing a compartmentalized and dark feeling kitchen Sliding doors on the opposite wall added a view to the pretty treed backyard but only allowed in some defused light. The kitchen had two windows on the third wall. A bay window in front of a sink and a large window with a fixed pane of glass which was low to the ground.

The windows were different sizes and shapes, symmetry was a problem, and both windows looked out to a neighbouring brick wall. The entrance to the kitchen and dining room was through the front hall, with a set of double doors leading to the dining room and a single entry doorway into the kitchen. The dividing wall housed the third doorway.

There was much emphasis on the formal dining room; the kitchen was tucked in the back corner of the house. Not inductive for today’s lifestyle.

The design Solution

The new floor plan required and created one, multi-functional, light-filled open space. The new space was transformed, with the elimination of the dividing wall, relocating doorways, covering up the low to the ground fixed pane window and enlarging the entry from the front hall. The new space filled with natural light and additional light requirements was augmented with a lighting plan, which balanced out the light levels.
